#list-articles-category-1-56 { --categoryColor: var(--cp-module-style-color6); } Smith County Burn Ban Update SEPTEMBER 8, 2026 UPDATE: Three weeks after the Smith County Burn Ban was issued, there have been 142 outdoor burning reports countywide. Smith County Fire Marshal Chad Hogue gave an update to Commissioners Court on Tuesday, September 8. During the first week, there were 58 outdoor fire incidents, 37 incidents during the second week and 47 outdoor burning calls last week. He said the Smith County Fire Marshal’s Office has written 23 citations for all three weeks, but he did not know how many were issued by other agencies in the county. As of Tuesday, the latest average Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) for Smith County was at 669 – a decrease from 735 he reported a week ago. The KBDI ranges from 0 to 800 and is used to determine forest fire potential. Hogue said although Smith County saw some rain in parts of the county, it was not a significant amount. Some areas didn’t get any rain. “We are pretty much where we started when we started the burn ban,” he said. #list-articles-category-1-57 { --categoryColor: var(--cp-module-style-color6); } Proposed Tax Rate and Public Hearing Set After Smith County Commissioners Court decided on a new proposed tax rate for FY2027, the court voted to hold another public hearing on September 15, 2026. They had initially decided on the proposed tax rate of .392898 cents per $100 valuation. After further discussions, the tax rate in the proposed budget was reduced through the use of excess reserves to cover a portion of the county's debt service payments for the upcoming fiscal year. They have now set the proposed tax rate at .374088 cents. For the median-valued homestead property, if the FY 27 proposed budget and tax rate are adopted, the estimated property tax impact compared with the FY 27 No New Revenue Rate for the same property is an increase of approximately $42 per year, or 4.6 percent. The FY2027 Proposed Budget is expected to be filed with the County Clerk’s Office before the Public Hearing. The public hearing on the FY27 Proposed Budget and Proposed Tax Rate is set for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, in the Commissioners Courtroom on the first floor of the Annex Building, located at 200 E. Ferguson St. in Tyler. County News Posted on September 01, 2026
